"We are One"
Savannah CLC Fish Fry
April 9, 2011

What a huge success!  The annual 2011 Savannah Regional Central Labor Council Fish Fry had the largest turnout ever on Saturday April 9th.  From 11:30am – 2:30pm, 203 people shared fish, conversation and fellowship.

Local labor leaders, rank and file members, retirees, religious and community activists, business friends of working families, and the Georgia AFL-CIO President and Secretary Treasurer and children sat with judges, city alderman, candidates, the sheriff, the district attorney, the county commission chair, business leaders, and the staff of the 12th Congressional District.  Issues important to working families were the conversation of the day and received with enthusiasm.

Specifically, “We Are One” in support and defense of public sector unions.  Collective bargaining is not the culprit of states’ deficits.  How could New York having a high concentration of represented public employees with collective bargaining have the same 16% deficit as Mississippi with only 5% public sector collective bargaining?  Reduced revenues from high unemployment coupled with corporate tax breaks are affecting all levels of government.

An unemployed apprentice spoke on Georgia’s Labor Commissioner’s refusal to accept $175 million from the federal government to extend unemployment to Georgia workers out of work.

A great time was had by all.  Thank you to the co-sponsors: Brooks Law Firm, Morgan & Morgan and American Income Life.  A special thanks to 40 year member of Carpenters local 256, Tommy Bragg who didn’t stop frying fish and IAM District 112 business agent Tony Wilson for the tea and use of his truck for transport.
